In Office Procedures: Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure that is performed after a Pap smear comes back abnormal.

In this procedure the doctor will take a closer look at the cells in the cervix. A colposcope is the tool that the doctor will use to examine the cells. This acts as a magnifying device allowing your physician to see the abnormal cells more clearly. During this procedure it is possible that your physician will want to take a biopsy of the cervix and send it off for lab work. This is done to see how abnormal the cells are and to see if additional treatment is necessary.
