Obstetrics: High Risk Pregnancy

A high risk pregnancy is one that requires further monitoring than other pregnancies.

A NST is a procedure that is performed to measure fetal well-being and is a way to observe your baby during this time. This is done by monitoring fetal heart tones and contractions. Increases in the fetal rates are reassuring of well-being; and the test is then considered reactive. This test lasts approximately 30-60 minutes depending upon your baby’s activity and the number of fetuses that you are carrying. It is important to eat a light meal 30 minutes prior to your test, and to bring a healthy snack with you to your appointment. This will increase fetal movement.

High risk pregnancies are also monitored with ultrasounds in order to view your fetus in a non-invasive way.
